In December 2012, a friend posted a photo on my Facebook timeline that included a photo of me and a screenshot of someone in a YouTube video.

The girl on the picture was looking at me, and I was looking back at myself.

I was adopted, but I thought if I had a twin sister, it would have been mentioned on my adoption records. I researched a bit more on the doppelganger, but could not find any information on her.

Two months later, a friend told me that the girl was in a new film, “21 & Over.” After scrutinizing the trailer and scanning the cast and crew’s names, I could finally search: “Samantha Futerman.”

My blood pressure dropped and my eyes opened as wide as they physically could on her date and place of birth: South Korea. I turned to my friend on the bus and excitedly shouted,

“She is born 11/19/1987!!!!”

“So what?” he casually asked.

“I am born 11/19/1987!!!!”

Her name and surname sounded like she would have been adopted too. Then I found her YouTube video: “How It Feels to Be Adopted.”.When I first saw the video, I thought that my American accent sounded amazing! Then I realized… oh right… NOT me. I immediately thought of The Parent Trap, except that it was reaI life.

I decided to get in touch with her.

My name is Anaïs, I am french and live in London,

About 2 months ago, my friend was watching one of your videos with Kevjumba on youtube, and he saw you and thought that we looked really very similar...
like... VERY REALLY SIMILAR...we were making jokes about it etc. (I'm always being violent with people and hitting them too hahaha)

Today, he saw the trailer of 21 & over and told me he saw you again, I then checked your name on the cast, stalked you A BIT, and found out you were born the 19th of november 1987.

I checked more of your videos (which are hilarious) and then came upon how it feels to be adopted'... and discovered you were adopted too.

So..I don't want to be too Linday Lohan,
well...but..how to put it..I was wondering where you were born?
I was born on the 19th of November 1987, in Busan but my papers were made at the Holt Chuldren's Institute, so "officially" I was born in Seoul. My korean name is Kim Eunwha. I arrived in France the 5th March 1988, so 3 months later.

At first glance, I saw only my own face staring back from “her” profile picture. After I read her message, I had to talk to her. Through just a few brief-yet-super-effing-loaded Facebook interactions, I was positive that this girl was in fact my biological twin sister.

We met on Skype five days later.

Anaïs and I knew that our story only happens in movies… and of course me and all my friends are involved in the entertainment industry and filmmaking. Everyone encouraged me to keep records of the process because it was so unique. Anaïs and I wanted to share our story with the world, so we decided to make a documentary with our friends.

We went over budgeting and decided that the best way to raise money was through Kickstarter because social media had already been the catalyst for our reunion. We thought we should keep our lives in the world that had given us so much already! We ended up raising more than $40,000, which funded the first portion of our production, including our first meeting in London.

Meeting each other in person was...weird. Even after seeing each other and talking every single day online.

Seeing Sam for the first time put me into shock. I didn't know I was that short.

We originally planned for our production to be only 10 days in London, but as our relationship expanded, so did our film!

Since our first meeting, we have had the opportunity to travel around the globe together, discovering more about ourselves every single day.

We explored our homeland in South Korea

And attended a conference with Korean adoptees from across the globe.

We even celebrated our first birthday together in Paris!

Anaïs also experienced her first Thanksgiving in the States.

Now we are working to finish our documentary, with the help of our Kickstarter backers.

We have a second Kickstarter campaign going on now. Donate to help us make this movie the best it can be. We want to represent the extremity of our relationship and the epic connectedness every single person has to the world thanks to platforms like Facebook. We are also writing a book with Penguin Publishing Company. Hopefully both will be available by 2015.

This entire experience has expanded and opened my mind to accept whatever happens. It has also taught me that family is so much more than I had ever expected. The definition of family is constantly being redefined, and that is thrilling!

This past year has broadened my mind and has showed me how exciting life really is. I must always be ready for the unexpected. It reminds me that remarkable, true, stories happen every single day.
