A group interview involves a number of candidates placed within a group setting. These candidates are then interviewed by one or more company representatives, who ask the candidates to interact with one another and answer a series of questions. In some group interview settings, candidates are placed into groups and asked to participate in activities. At all times throughout the interview, they are being continually assessed by the interviewer.
During a group interview there are certain do’s and don’ts that candidates should conform to in order to be successful:
Speaking at the right moment
Knowing when and when not to speak up is crucial within a group interview setting, as stealing the limelight by speaking too much can have a negative impact on your interview success. Striking a balance between providing insightful, informative answers and listening to others can be tricky to master, whilst ensuring that you are not too quiet and unresponsive is another factor to bear in mind.
Providing the right balance of information
A group interview is not the time for you to sit and talk about yourself continuously. It is important to be mindful of your responses as this is an opportunity for everybody to speak up. Do not talk at length about yourself at this stage – answer the questions that you have been asked with a high-quality answer, and ensure that you are confident in your responses.

Demonstrate your team player skills
Oftentimes, the primary purpose for hosting a group interview is to assess how candidates cope in a group setting. Candidates will be asked to perform a series of problem solving tasks, which are designed to assess their cooperation skills within a team. At this point, it is important that you get involved and are genuine in what you say and do.
If you are asked to make a decision about something, express your opinion in a diplomatic manner. Do not allow others’ opinions to shroud your own. Be confident enough to speak up; remember you are all present to sell yourselves, demonstrate your skills and ultimately land the job.
Group interview success
Group interview success is all about striking a balance between being a creative and vocal team player and a cooperative listener. It is crucial that you do not come across as bossy, overly loud or arrogant. Equally so, you need to ensure that you are not sidelined for being overly quiet and lacking in confidence.
