Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English
county of Wiltshire, about 2.0 miles (3.2 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13
km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge
is composed of a circular setting of large standing stones set within
earthworks. It is at the center of the most dense complex of Neolithic and
Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
กองหินประหลาดนี้อยู่กลางทุ่งนาแห่งเมืองซัลลิสเบอรี ห่างจากกรุงลอนดอนประมาณ 10 ไมล์ ประกอบด้วยแนวหินขนาดมหึมาหินเรียงรายราว ๆ 3 กิโลเมตร และ มีกลุ่มหินใหญ่ประมาณ 112 ก้อน ตั้งโดดเดี่ยวอยู่กลางทุ่งนา เป็นรูปวงกลมซ้อนกันอยู่ 3 วง บางก้อนล้มนอน บางก้อนตั้งตรง บางก้อนวางซ้อนทับอยู่บนยอดก้อนหินที่ตั้งอยู่สองก้อน วงกลมรอบนอก มีเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางยาว 100 ฟุต มีหินทั้งหมด 30 ก้อน แต่ละก้อนสูง 13 ฟุต วงกลมรอบกลาง มีเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางยาว 76 ฟุต มีหินทั้งหมด 40 ก้อน มีสองก้อนตั้งสูงถึง 22 ฟุต วงในสุด มีเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลางยาว 50 ฟุต มีหินทั้งหมด 42 ก้อน ล้มบ้างตั้งสูงบ้าง หินแต่ละก้อนหนักเป็นตันๆ เฉลี่ยแล้วสูง 4 เมตร หนัก 26 ตัน มีผู้สันนิษฐานว่าตั้งอยู่ในที่นั้นมาตั้งแต่ก่อนคริสตกาลถึง 1,700 ปี เป็นสิ่งก่อสร้างที่โดยไม่มีร่องรอยของความเป็นมา ไม่มีใครทราบว่าใครเป็นผู้สร้าง, สร้างเพื่อวัตถุประสงค์อะไร? ที่น่าแปลกก็คือ ในริเวณนั้นเป็นทุ่งกว้าง ไม่มีภูเขาและสิ่งก่อสร้างด้วยก้อนหินอื่น ๆ อีกเลย จึงทำให้สงสัยว่าผู้ก่อสร้างนำหินเหล่านั้นมาจากไหน และไม่ปรากฏว่ามีการขน หรือสิ่งปรักหักพังในการก่อสร้าง บริเวณที่ดังกล่าว ใช้อะไรยกหินก้อน ที่หนัก ๆ หลาย ๆ ตันขึ้นวางซ้อนกันได้ ซึ่งอยู่สูงถึง 13 ฟุต นับเป็นสิ่งก่อสร้างที่มหัศจรรย์ที่ท้าทายความอยากรู้ของมนุษย์ยุคปัจจุบันยิ่งนัก
